ILA - Instructional Leadership Academy

This course explores the research, knowledge, and instructional practices that underpin high-quality teaching and learning. Participants examine how students learn, barriers to learning, student engagement, motivation, literacy across the curriculum, culturally responsive and inclusive practices, and evidence-informed instructional strategies. Throughout the course, participants connect current learning theory with classroom practice while strengthening their ability to lead instructional improvement within their schools. Emphasis is also placed on developing the knowledge and skills required to facilitate meaningful professional learning for educators.

Building on the instructional foundations established in Course 1, this course focuses on assessment practices that improve teaching, learning, and student achievement. Participants explore formative and summative assessment, grading and evaluation, balanced assessment systems, feedback, and the effective use of evidence to inform instructional decisions. The course also examines bias in assessment, culturally responsive assessment practices, and approaches that support equitable and inclusive learning environments. Participants strengthen their capacity to lead assessment practices that promote student success and continuous improvement.

This experiential course develops the coaching knowledge and skills instructional leaders need to support teacher growth and improve instructional practice. Through coaching labs, school-based practicums, and reflective learning, participants learn to use strength-based coaching approaches, conduct effective classroom observations, provide descriptive feedback, and facilitate professional conversations that promote reflection and continuous improvement. Grounded in current research, the course emphasizes relationship-building, trust, and instructional coaching as a powerful strategy for improving teaching and learning.

Grounded in Nova Scotia's Inclusive Education Policy and the Educational Leadership Standards, this course prepares educational leaders to recognize, respond to, and proactively address racism and discrimination within school communities. Participants critically examine personal beliefs, biases, systemic inequities, and organizational practices while engaging with First Voice experiences and current research. The course focuses on leading courageous conversations, fostering equitable and inclusive school cultures, building authentic partnerships with students, families, and communities, and using evidence to inform meaningful action. Participants develop the confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills needed to create learning environments where every student feels valued, respected, safe, and supported to succeed.

This course focuses on leading collaborative cultures that improve teaching, learning, and student achievement. Participants explore collaborative learning teams, collective efficacy, improvement planning, and evidence-informed decision-making while developing skills in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting multiple sources of student and school data. Through an embedded action research project connected to their own school context, participants investigate a leadership challenge, implement improvement strategies, and evaluate their impact. The course strengthens participants' ability to lead collaborative inquiry and continuous school improvement grounded in evidence and shared responsibility for student success.

As the culminating course in the Instructional Leadership Academy, this course prepares participants for the broad responsibilities of school leadership beyond instructional practice. Participants explore leadership related to school operations, human resource management, finance, facilities, policy, governance, legal responsibilities, and organizational leadership while maintaining a strong focus on improving teaching and learning. The course also examines leadership for school culture, professional learning communities, organizational change, and continuous improvement. Through collaborative seminars and applied learning, participants strengthen their capacity to lead safe, equitable, effective, and high-performing school communities while aligning their practice with the Educational Leadership Standards.
